Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny is the Puerto Rican artist who dragged Spanish-language rap to the very top of the global charts without ever switching to English. The self-styled "King of Latin Trap," he became the most-streamed artist in the world in the early 2020s.

Origins

Born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, he was bagging groceries and uploading tracks to SoundCloud when "Soy Peor" went viral in 2016. Within a few years he was headlining stadiums and topping the Billboard 200 with all-Spanish albums.

The sound

He blends reggaeton and Latin trap with everything from bachata and dembow to rock and salsa, paired with a deadpan, conversational flow and a willingness to bend gender norms in his fashion and videos. His records are sonically adventurous in a genre often accused of formula.

Legacy

Widely credited with helping Spanish-language rap reach mainstream global popularity, he has shattered streaming records, won multiple Grammys and Latin Grammys, and used his platform for Puerto Rican political causes. He is regularly cited among the greatest Latino rappers of all time.

Signature song

Dákiti

"Dákiti" (2020), with Jhay Cortez, topped charts worldwide and showcased the hypnotic, minimalist side of his sound—proof that a moody, untranslated track could become a planet-wide hit.
