Cartola was a Brazilian singer, composer and poet considered a major figure in the development of samba.

Origins

Born Angenor de Oliveira, he helped found the Estação Primeira da Mangueira samba school in 1928 and was popular through the 1930s, before stepping away from the scene in the 1940s and returning in 1956.

Legacy
