Carlos Santana

Carlos Santana is the Mexican-American guitarist whose blend of rock, blues, and Latin rhythm gave the world a wholly new sound. His singing, sustained guitar tone is one of the most recognizable in popular music.

Orígenes

Born in Autlán, Mexico, and raised partly in Tijuana before moving to San Francisco, he formed the band Santana and exploded onto the scene with a era-defining performance at Woodstock in 1969—before the group had even released its first album.

El sonido

Santana pioneered a fusion of rock and roll with Latin American and African rhythms, his melodic blues-based lines floating over congas, timbales, and percussion rarely heard in rock. The result was simultaneously spiritual, danceable, and unmistakably his.

Legado

A founding figure of Latin rock and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, he sold tens of millions of records and engineered one of music's great comebacks with 1999's Supernatural, which won nine Grammys. He remains a bridge between Latin heritage and global rock.

Canción insignia

Oye Como Va

His scorching cover of Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va" (1970) turned a mambo standard into a rock radio staple and became the definitive showcase of the Santana sound.
