Caetano Veloso
Caetano Veloso is one of Brazil's most important and intellectually restless musicians, a founding voice of the Tropicália movement and a constant creative force in MPB for over five decades.
Origens
Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, he emerged in the 1960s alongside Gilberto Gil and others in Tropicália, a movement fusing music, poetry, and theatre that challenged the cultural conservatism of Brazil's military dictatorship—activism that led to his arrest and exile in London.
O som
His music ranges from delicate bossa-influenced ballads to experimental rock and avant-garde pop, always anchored by poetic, politically aware lyrics and a soft, expressive voice. He treats the song as a vehicle for ideas as much as melody.
Legado
A best-selling, much-decorated artist with nineteen Brazilian Music Awards and multiple Latin Grammys, he is regarded as a national treasure and one of the most influential figures in Brazilian popular music, admired worldwide by fellow artists.
Música símbolo
Alegria, Alegria
"Alegria, Alegria" (1967) was a manifesto of the Tropicália movement—its electric guitars and collage of modern imagery announced a new, irreverent direction for Brazilian song.
